My dad and I were the first to arrive at Samurai Judo Club on Zortech Avenue in Kidderminster. It’s a large building with most of the space taken up with the dojo in the centre. There’s a small practice area in the corner which has a super springy floor that’s great for handsprings!
After doing my standard warm-up I practised a number of standing throw combinations on my dad and then moved to escapes and hold downs. My nana, grandad, mum and little brother Alex arrived 10-15 minutes before the competition started.
I was in a pool of three. I won two and lost one getting the silver medal. However, I had two more fights for experience and fought the boy I had lost against. This time I won so I felt better after that.
If you can get there, Kidderminster is a good venue to go to and the standard of the competitors is fairly good, so well worth the travelling and experience. Unfortunately for this competition there were a number of other local and national competitions on the same day so the turnout was lower than normal. But this didn’t affect the day for me.
